Times have always been tough for publicly funded photography organisations. It is encouraging to see that organisations are actually talking about co-operation instead of plotting against each other in partisan elements. The common history that is referred to in this report is really a history of advocacy. For years everyone got behind an idea about photography, until there were lots of ideas. The challege this group faces, it seems to me, is how to transcend that.

Involved in Photographic practice and teaching all my life you have very accurately described the benefits of University Education especially in a Faculty of Art & Design. Also in the afterlife of such an introduction to the practice of the medium as a profession or as an amateur. I am enjoying both

As you may or may not know I curated for the Hereford Photographic Festival the first exhibition of the lives work of John Blakemore which lead to
the purchase via Peter James of this Archive. We both claim each being the others mentor via our photographic practice's and teaching fine black and white print making.

It is great to hear that Jo's work has at last found a home. As curator of the Hayward selection, Three Perspectives on Photography: Feminism and Photography in 1979, I envisioned Jo's work entering the fine art world as an intervention into a space which sorely miscalculated the potential for complex non- traditional work that did not fit the script of the modernist convention of art for art sake.Even Jo at the time had to be persuaded (by me) that the museum site and its audience was a place for her to extend her reach. The rest is history!

Charlotte's comments quoted here just re-enforce the fundamental problems at the heart of many institutions. They are drowning themselves in a quagmire of bureaucracy, which greatly hinders progress and at worst makes it impossible. Until this changes we will all continue to suffer the consequences.
I'm not surprised Charlotte has expressed a interest in returning to the US. But it is a great shame that her talents and support for photography appear to not be valued in the UK.

11. Use the facilities to their most.
Use everything that the school has to offer; use it, understand it, master it. You never know when you can use it later or when it might be called upon.

12. Use the faculty to their most.
Grab a teacher, tutor, lecturer and make sure they know who you are and what you are trying to achieve. Push them; make sure they give you their honest critiques. You are paying for it, get the most out of everything.
Make sure you come out of school with a portfolio that stands on it's own; not some jumbled together mishmash of personal work that will mean nothing to a creative in the industry on the outside. That's what they are there for so use them.

13. LIVE PHOTOGRAPHY.
I cannot stress this one enough. If you love fashion, know fashion. Be able to identify every designer's garments. If you want to be an architectural photographer, know all the styles and architects out there. If you want to be an advertising photographer, know the trends and bran dings for the major players in your field. If you are wishy washy about any of it, you will end up posting your images on Facebook every week looking for 'pats on the back' from all your friends while the real talent is passing you by because they are spending their time researching before they shoot.
