Will Eames
Ulster University - MFA Photography
Selector's Comment: Eames turns his camera to subject matter close to hand, his family home under threat of repossession. One of an estimated 117,889 estimated to be at risk in Ireland as part of the economic crash. Framed by this information, these images of 'normal life' start to fray, revealing the contingent nature of Eames's familial surroundings.

Durbin Lewis Ltd
Royal College of Art - MA Photography
Selector's Comment: At first I thought this was a photograph of furniture from a Masonic hall. (Familiar to me through European Heritage Open Days.) It is similarly leaden furniture with echoes of ceremonial garb in the draped material placed on these assemblages. Elsewhere stacked TVs, with tasteful test card stripes, form a sensuous altar for the worship of retro deities.

Kerstin Zahn
University of Westminster - MA Photographic Studies
Selector's Comment: 'Places of Safety' comes out of conversations between the photographer and a variety of individuals about the meaning and importance of safety, drawing on personal memories and fantasies about what these concepts might entail. The staging of these ideas, using the same desert like studio backdrop, are a curious mix of cultural references, some easier to read than others, which draws me in. Choose your refuge: 'Waiting for Godot' or 'Plan 9 from Outer Space'?

Yuxin Jiang
University of Westminster - MA Photographic Studies
Selector's Comment: Jiang's background research is in visual representations of depression since the 1950s. This work comes out of a close friend's experience of needing hospital treatment. It mixes images of pills, text outlining their possible side effects and staged imagery to explore some of the feelings and events around her friend's illness. A piece of work that provides a different range of imagery around a subject matter that is often reduced to an image of someone with their head in their hands.

Alecsandra Raluca Dragoi
University of Westminster - MA Documentary Photography and Photojournalism
Selector's Comment: Working in London and Racșa, Dragoi documents the lives of families spilt between Romania and the UK. There is a stark contrast between the expansive rural landscapes and the claustrophobic conditions of families living in cramped shared accommodation in London. Traditional folk costumes and flat screen TVs make for another interesting and less oppressive shift in cultural register.
