Zingiber
Zingiber is my personal deep dive into the colours of red hair. The word ginger is often seen as a negative when describing red hair. However the family of ginger plants, Zingiberaceae, are seen as plants of beauty and health. Alpinia Purpurata, commonly referred to as red ginger, was where I started to draw connections between the plant’s colours and the word ginger. Through alt darkroom processes, I’ve curated my own ginger colours to explore the connection between these plants and red hair. Using microscopic slides of ginger root to symbolise the connection between the plants and the common genetic variants in the MC1R genes that cause red hair, freckles and fair skin. Zingiber, explores the beauty of red hair.
