Thirty-five years ago, my mother made a painting of a doll, Cosetta. It is an observational study of a doll forgotten at the back of a room, no longer wanted. The painting now resides on the floor in a room of mess forgotten, left to the side, never on the wall. This painting was unbeknownst to my mother a self-portrait, perfectly encapsulating the feeling of isolation that she felt. The doll now acts as a gateway to exploring transgenerational trauma in female relationships of the family. I document my grandmother, mother and I to gently contemplate the complexity of mother daughter relationships and the physical body trauma which binds them.
